Environmental Storytelling - A trip to a well known public cafe

I LOVE people watching. So for my interior location I wanted to go somewhere that is well known to me, somewhere where I can watch, listen and examine human nature.

So I went to a my Costa's of which I am a regular. There is nothing intriguing about its aesthetic or architecture, but I'm not interested in capturing that in my drawings, I want to capture life of an environment (or lack of) as environments can really set a scene and feeling for an animation and I wish to convey that.

Why I chose a mass chain cafe is because I wanted to capture the mass consumerism that comes with it, and also the mass chains on average have the most people which appeals to me to watch and capture the business and liveliness.

One thing that always gets me about coffee shops is the pungent coffee aroma which stays on your clothes for ages after, I would love to capture that by painting some settings with this medium.

The whole cafe does have a modern interior however, loads of curves, the typical style to a mass chain business.

Through my people watching, I generated quite a few sketches, many drawn straight from life, and thoughts.

I then started to get a bit caught up in my thoughts and produced drawings with a more fine art approach.

I was examining the selection of cakes, thinking how they are laid out to tempt and persuade to purchase.
