The art behind the screen - Jane Clarke

Jane Clarke has been "in the shadows" creating storyboards for some of our most prestigious film releases for decades. Her webpage offers you a small insight into the masses of storyboard samples she has produced over the years, and in my opinion it is truly brilliant to see.

Above is an extract of one her frames for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. You can see her drawings are expressive yet remain highly detailled in nature, perfect for the dirctor to cunjour to life in live action. You can feel the movement of Harry as he struggles under the pain of the Gilliweed, sinking lower and lower, as do our expectations of him to succeed. The irratic movemnts offer an ambiguity to wether he will prevail, and also keeps the audience gripped as it heightens our tension towards our beloved protagonist.

Her drawings also emphasise lighting, with a white marker she highlights to show reflections and arrows to show the precise direction of the droplet as it falls out of shot. She also considers really creative frame compositions to create dramatic results.

What I found most brilliant about seeing Clarkes storyboards was the fact that I have seen the live action version of her shots and it really emphasises how vital storyboarders are in the production of film.
